Dane Van Niekerk was a member of the Northern Women and Highveld Lions in South Africa’s domestic cricket. Selectors opted to put her in the South African women’s cricket squad for the 2009 Cricket World Cup in Australia after observing her steady domestic results and considering her great skill. Despite being just 16 years old, she wowed the tennis world with her performance in the 7th-place match versus Srilanka.
Her illustrious career was only getting started.
In a match against the West Indies in 2013, she became the first South African woman to score a hat trick on the international stage. Dane Van Niekerk took five wickets in the same match. She became the first South African woman to take two five-wicket hauls in one-day internationals against Pakistan the following year.
